Michael May comes with a wealth of experience gained from a creative life that includes performing, composing, teaching and mentoring. Receiving his first guitar at age 12 as a Christmas gift was the
beginning of a creative life in the arts. Michael graduated from Wayne State University in 1997 with a Bachelor’s degree with concentration in Music. While in college Michael began composing and made connections with Wayne State's Theater Department. He played in many theater productions including “Chicago” and “Godspell”. He also had the opportunity to perform his compositions with WCC Jazz Combo at Detroit Montreux Jazz Festival. Michael has studied with jazz saxophonist Vincent York, jazz guitarist John E. Lawrence, composer James Heartway, and composer/guitarist James Lentini.
Since graduation, Michael has continued to have a robust creative life that includes teaching all levels of players in all styles of popular music. Michael continues to enjoy teaching beginners and advanced
players of all ages. Rock, Blues, Jazz, Folk, Ear Training, Music Theory, Composition and Performance are things that Michael blends into his teaching style to help make complex ideas more accessible to his
Michael currently works with Twin Cities Mobile Jazz as a mentor /teacher. You can see him in performance with his variety duo “Art Dept.” Michael continues to write, compose and study. He has 3 beautiful children who he says “are the best music I ever made”.
